Requirements of power adapter shell and pin in corresponding safety standards


Power adapter in different safety standards, such as audio and video, information, household appliances, medical,LED driver power, such as safety standards, power adapter AC plug in accordance with the European standard, Australian standard, British standard; Power adapter pins have requirements and specifications that vary according to Class 1, Class 2, and so on.


Safety standards

IEC/EN 60065

IEC/EN 60950

Electrical appliances: IEC/EN 60335

Medical power supply standard: IEC/EN 60601

LED drive power standard: IEC/EN 61347


AC plug standard

General requirements: IEC 60884-1.

European plug: EN 50075.

Australian plug: Annex J of AS/NZS 3112.

UK plug: BS 1363.


Pins standard

Class 1 power supply (3pin AC socket) Class 2 power supply (2pin AC socket).

Class 1 power supply leakage current 0.75ma (Max).

Class 2 power supply leakage current 0.25mA(Max).

The high voltage test of Class 1 power supply was 1500VAC 60SEC 10mA.

The high voltage test of Class 2 power supply is 3000VAC 60SEC 10mA.

Class 1 power supply nameplate has no "return" double insulation symbol.

Class 2 power supply nameplate has "return" double insulation symbol.

There are requirements for Class 1 power protection grounding resistance test.

No requirement for Class 2 power protection grounding resistance test.


Heat/fire resistance requirements for plastic enclosures.

Thermal stress test of plastic shell: the maximum temperature under normal working condition is +10 ℃, not less than 70 ℃ (60065/60950).

Ball pressure test of plastic shell: the maximum temperature under normal working condition is +15 ℃, not lower than 70 ℃ (61558).

Plastic ball pressure test for supporting charged body: 125 oC (61558/60950).

Plastic enclosure fire rating: v-1 (60950).

Hot wire test for plastic shell: 650 oC (61558).

Limited Power Source Test (only 60950).

Passing or not does not affect the certification.

Those who pass this test can use HB grade plastic shell.


Flame retardant grade of plastic shell

HB: minimum flame retardant grade, for 3-13mm samples, combustion speed < 40mm/min for < 3mm samples, combustion speed < 70mm/min, or extinguish before the 100mm mark.

V2: after two 10s combustion tests on the sample, the residual flame was extinguished within 60s, and the dripping particles ignited the cotton.

V1: after two 10s combustion tests on the sample, the residual flame will be extinguished within 60s, and the dripping particles shall not ignite the cotton.

V0: after two 10s combustion tests, the residual flame will be extinguished within 30 seconds.

5VB: after 5s combustion test for the sample for 2 times, the residual flame will be extinguished within 60s. The dripping particles are not allowed to ignite the cotton, and the block sample is allowed to be burnt through.

5VA: after 5s combustion test on the sample for 2 times, the residual flame will be extinguished within 30s. The dripping particles shall not ignite the cotton, and the block sample shall not be burned through.


Waterproof and dustproof grade

The identification format of IP grade is IPXX, where XX is two Arabic digits, the first digit represents dustproof; The second number indicates waterproofing, and the larger the number indicates the higher the protection level.


Dust level

1.No protection no special protection.

2.To prevent the intrusion of objects larger than 50mm to prevent the body from accidentally touching the internal parts of the lamp to prevent the intrusion of objects larger than 50mm in diameter.

3.Prevent objects larger than 12mm from intruding and prevent fingers from touching internal parts of the lamp

4.To prevent the invasion of objects larger than 2.5mm. To prevent the invasion of tools, wires or objects larger than 2.5mm in diameter.

5.Prevent invasion of objects larger than 1.0mm. Prevent invasion of mosquitoes, insects or objects with diameter greater than 1.0.

6. Dust prevention can not completely prevent dust invasion, but the amount of dust invasion will not affect the normal operation of lamps and lanterns.

7.Dust proof completely prevents dust invasion.


Waterproof level

Zero: No protection no special protection

One: Prevent water droplets from falling vertically

Two: When the lamp is tilted 15 degrees, it can still prevent dripping

Three: To prevent the injection of water into the rainwater, or the vertical entry Angle is less than 50 degrees of the direction of the injection of water

Four: Prevent splashing water from entering in all directions

Five: To prevent the intrusion of large waves of water or the rapid injection of water from the blowhole

Six:  Prevent the intrusion of large waves of water into the lamps and lanterns in a certain time or water pressure conditions, can still ensure the normal operation of lamps and lanterns.

Seven: To prevent the intrusion of invading water into the lamp and ensure the normal operation of the lamp under the condition of certain water pressure.

Eight:  Prevent sinking effects.


In the special requirements of industry is often in the safety standard for the power adapter, AC plug standard, AC pins standard, the high pressure test standard, heat/fire protection requirements of plastic shell, there are requirements. The power adapter for indoor use commonly no stringent requirements in terms of waterproof and dustproof, only outdoor power supply will have special requirements on waterproof and dustproof.
